Job Title: Housekeeper / Domestic Assistant

Reports To: Care Home Manager / Unit Manager

Accountable To: Goodwill Healthcare Services Limited (GHS CARE) Agency Manager/Director

Contract Type: Temporary, Agency, Flexible Shifts, Zero-Hour Contract

Hours: Days, Evenings, Weekends, Nights and Bank Holidays as required


JOB PURPOSE

The Housekeeper / Domestic Assistant plays an essential role in maintaining a clean, safe, hygienic, and welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and staff. The post holder will ensure all assigned areas are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness while adhering to infection prevention, health and safety, and care home policies.

The role contributes significantly to resident wellbeing by promoting a comfortable and dignified living environment within residential, nursing, dementia, supported living, and healthcare settings.


MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Cleaning and Environmental Hygiene

  1. Clean, disinfect, and maintain resident bedrooms, communal areas, dining rooms, lounges, bathrooms, offices, and staff facilities.

  2. Vacuum, mop, sweep, polish, dust, and sanitise all surfaces according to cleaning schedules and organisational standards.

  3. Ensure high standards of cleanliness are maintained throughout the service at all times.

  4. Dispose of waste safely and appropriately in accordance with infection control procedures.

  5. Clean and maintain furnishings, fixtures, equipment, and fittings.

  6. Report maintenance issues, damaged equipment, or environmental concerns promptly.

Laundry and Linen Services

  1. Assist with laundry duties including sorting, washing, drying, ironing, and folding clothing and linens.

  2. Ensure residents' personal clothing is handled respectfully and returned correctly.

  3. Maintain adequate supplies of clean linen and bedding.

  4. Follow infection prevention procedures when handling contaminated laundry.

Infection Prevention and Control

  1. Adhere to all infection prevention and control policies and procedures.

  2. Ensure all cleaning activities meet current hygiene and healthcare standards.

  3. Safely use cleaning chemicals and equipment in accordance with COSHH regulations.

  4. Maintain hand hygiene standards and utilise appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  5. Support outbreak management procedures where required.

Stock Control and Equipment Management

  1. Monitor cleaning supplies, toiletries, PPE, laundry products, and linen stock levels.

  2. Record stock usage accurately and report shortages to management.

  3. Ensure cleaning equipment is maintained in a safe and operational condition.

  4. Store cleaning products securely and safely.

Resident Wellbeing and Customer Service

  1. Promote a warm, welcoming, and respectful environment for residents and visitors.

  2. Demonstrate dignity, compassion, patience, and professionalism at all times.

  3. Respect residents' privacy, personal preferences, and independence.

  4. Respond courteously to requests from residents, relatives, and staff.

  5. Work collaboratively with care teams to support resident comfort and satisfaction.

Communication and Record Keeping

  1. Maintain accurate records of cleaning schedules and completed tasks.

  2. Report hazards, incidents, accidents, or concerns promptly.

  3. Participate in handovers and communicate effectively with colleagues and management.

  4. Contribute to service improvements by identifying areas for enhanced cleanliness and efficiency.


HEALTH, SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT

  1. Comply with all Health and Safety legislation, policies, and procedures.

  2. Follow safe moving and handling practices where appropriate.

  3. Identify and report environmental hazards and risks immediately.

  4. Participate in fire safety procedures, drills, and emergency evacuation processes.

  5. Ensure all work activities are conducted safely to protect residents, staff, visitors, and self.

  6. Take responsibility for managing risks associated with cleaning activities and equipment.

  7. Follow safeguarding policies for vulnerable adults and report concerns appropriately.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Criteria

  • Previous housekeeping, domestic, cleaning, or environmental services experience.

  • Good understanding of cleaning procedures and hygiene standards.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Reliable, punctual, and professional approach.

  • Flexible availability for shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.

  • Ability to follow instructions, policies, and procedures.

  • Right to work in the United Kingdom.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience within care homes, nursing homes, hospitals, supported living, or healthcare environments.

  • Knowledge of COSHH regulations.

  • Infection Prevention and Control Training.

  • Manual Handling Awareness.

  • Health and Safety Training.

  • Enhanced DBS Certificate (or willingness to undergo screening).

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate may be required to complete mandatory training including:
